Welcome to a new edition of the Green Gas Wire, bringing you the latest developments from across Europe’s biogas and biomethane sectors.
September brought biomethane directly into the public conversation. On the European Parliament Esplanade in Brussels, a giant symbolic key invited policymakers, industry representatives, journalists and citizens to answer one question: What is needed to unlock biomethane’s full potential? The installation marked the launch of EBA's 2026 communications campaign, Unlocking Europe's Own Circular Source of Clean Energy. As EBA President Piero Gattoni highlighted, "Coherence, infrastructure, and an industry thatis ready. That's the key, not a single answer, but an invitation".
The conversation now continues at European Biomethane Week, taking place in Brussels from 12 to 16 October 2026. The event will bring together producers, users, investors, policymakers, researchers and technology providers to explore how biomethane can contribute to Europe’s energy independence and competitiveness.
Alongside the campaign, this edition presents EBA's new Biomethane Purchase Agreement Playbook and leaflet on regulatory barriers to biogas development in Europe. It also follows EBA visits to operating plants in the United Kingdom, highlights practical learning through the European Renewable Gas Training Centre, and shares progress from several EU projects.

MEP Corrado unveiling the campaign in front of the European Parliament
EBA brought a symbolic key to the European Parliament Esplanade to open a public conversation about biomethane’s contribution to Europe’s energy transition and circular economy. Policymakers, industry representatives, citizens and organisations were invited to identify the policy, investment, infrastructure, innovation and public engagement needed to accelerate deployment. The conversation will continue through European Biomethane Week, bringing stakeholders together to explore what is needed to unlock biomethane’s full potential.

Joint Statement on the Role of Renewable Fuels in the Energy Transition of Heating
EBA also co-signed a joint statement highlighting the role of renewable heating fuels in helping Europe reduce emissions while strengthening energy security.
The statement calls for a policy framework that recognises renewable fuels as part of a balanced and technology-neutral approach to the energy transition.
Joint Industry Reaction Paper to the Electrification Action Plan
EBA joined industry partners in publishing a joint reaction paper calling for an energy framework that fully recognises the contribution of renewable gases to Europe’s competitiveness, energy security and decarbonisation objectives. The paper highlights the importance of creating the right conditions for renewable fuels to support the transition to a more resilient and sustainable energy system.
Why GHG accounting must align with renewable gas markets
The Let Green Gas Count campaign is coordinated by:
Renewable gas markets need greenhouse gas accounting rules that recognise credible market instruments and reflect how renewable gases are produced, traded and used.
In a new Enlit article, Sebastian Wren explains why alignment between accounting frameworks and renewable gas markets is essential for transparent reporting and continued market development.

New Biomethane Purchase Agreement Playbook
Biomethane Purchase Agreements can provide long-term revenue certainty for producers and a reliable renewable gas supply for offtakers. Prepared by Guidehouse and commissioned by EBA, the Playbook gives producers, buyers and financiers practical guidance on commercial structures, contracts, risk allocation and project financing.
Regulatory barriers to biogas development in Europe
EBA’s new leaflet maps the regulatory and administrative bottlenecks affecting biogas and biomethane development in Europe. It looks at five connected areas: permitting and planning; investment and market certainty; market integration; climate recognition and carbon accounting; and demand for biogases and co-products.
The recommendations include one-stop-shop permitting, fully digital procedures, dedicated national biomethane strategies, harmonised grid connection rights, compatible Guarantee of Origin registries, consistent GHG accounting, stronger recognition of digestate and biogenic CO₂, and measures to support demand in transport, buildings and industry.
European Biomethane Week is just around the corner! From 12 to 16 October 2026, Brussels will once again become the meeting point for Europe’s biogas and biomethane community under the theme “Made in Europe: Biomethane at the core of EU energy independence.”
Highlights of this year's programme include the ERGTC Masterclass, Sip & Spark: The Biomethane Social, the European Biogas Conference and the Biomethane Networking Reception.
Travel to Germany with spanish local communities to visit biomethane operating plants.
Biorig’s Mesas de Diálogo Verde initiative gives communities a direct role in selecting social or environmental projects supported through the company’s local reinvestment programme. Local authorities, associations, citizens and Biorig representatives assess proposals against local need, social and environmental impact, feasibility and innovation. The first roundtable began in San Millán de los Caballeros, León, in March 2026. Biorig estimates approximately €250,000 of investment over the plant’s 27-year life, including €55,000 in each of the first two years.
BIOMAPE webinar on national biomethane registries & new video
On 21 October, BIOMAPE will host a practical discussion on registry development, certificate management, cross-border trade and European market integration.
FERTICOVERY will host an online workshop on fertilising products from secondary raw materials, connecting research evidence with practical approaches for nutrient recovery and bio-based fertilisers.
At Gruppo CAP’s Bresso-Niguarda Wastewater Treatment Plant, EBA recorded an upcoming video about the Italian pilot. The facility combines sludge ozonolysis, biological biomethane upgrading, microalgae cultivation and co-digestion to increase renewable gas production and recover resources.
