Biomethane can accelerate Europe’s energy transition
The European Energy Forum (EEF), together with EBA, GRDF and Cefic, hosted a debate at the European Parliament on how biomethane can strengthen Europe's energy security, industrial competitiveness and defossilisation efforts, with Annette Kroll, Head of Regulation and Advocacy at ENGIE Renewable Gases Europe and EBA Board Member, representing the European Biogas Association.
Discussions highlighted biomethane's growing role as a strategic domestic energy source, supported by sustainable feedstocks, existing gas infrastructure and significant production potential across Europe. Participants also underlined the need to reduce regulatory complexity, facilitate grid access, improve feedstock availability, and accelerate permitting to unlock faster deployment.
Policy pulse
EU Livestock Strategy recognises the role of biogases 🚜
The European Commission has published its EU Livestock Strategy, recognising biogas, biomethane and nutrient recycling as key contributors to a more resilient, competitive and sustainable livestock sector. The strategy highlights the role of biogas in reducing agricultural emissions, improving manure management, supporting nutrient circularity and creating new income opportunities for farmers, while also announcing further work on digestate, RENURE and circular economy legislation.
As the EU prepares its post-2030 energy and climate framework, EBA has published a new position paper outlining how biogas and biomethane can strengthen Europe's energy security, competitiveness, and decarbonisation efforts.
The paper calls for a stable, harmonised, and technology-neutral framework that supports renewable gas deployment through stronger demand-side measures, simplified sustainability and certification rules, and the development of a dedicated bioCO₂ market. These recommendations aim to unlock investment and fully realise the potential of biogases in Europe's future energy system.
Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) has joined the growing coalition of industry organisations supporting the Joint Biomethane Declaration, reinforcing the role of biomethane in Europe's energy security, competitiveness and defossilisation. The Declaration outlines 10 priority actions to accelerate biomethane deployment, including scaling up production, removing regulatory barriers and creating a truly integrated European biomethane market.
Global industry leaders urge GHG Protocol to unlock renewable gaseous fuels markets
Around 90 global industry leaders have joined the Let Green Gas Count campaign in calling on the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol to recognise the environmental and climate benefits of renewable gaseous fuels in its upcoming Actions and Market Instruments (AMI) standard. The joint letter urges the GHG Protocol to align with established market practices, recognise contractual purchases, and support transparent reporting based on life cycle assessment. These changes are essential to unlock investment, accelerate decarbonisation, and strengthen renewable gaseous fuels markets worldwide.
EBA team explores biogas innovation in Sweden and Denmark
The EBA team recently visited leading biogas initiatives in Sweden and Denmark, gaining first-hand insights into innovative approaches to sustainable biomethane production. In Sweden, the focus was on unlocking agricultural resources for biogas, while in Denmark the team explored large-scale production, farmer partnerships, and nutrient recycling. Together, the visits highlighted how collaboration, innovation, and knowledge sharing are accelerating Europe's renewable gas transition.
The report show that Europe's biomethane production capacity has surpassed 8 bcm/year, with more than 1 bcm of new capacity added in just one year. Meanwhile, EBA's Investment Outlook reports €36 billion in announced investments, highlighting strong market confidence and the sector's potential to strengthen Europe's energy security and accelerate defossilisation.
Together, the reports also demonstrate the significant untapped potential for biomethane across Europe. Unlocking this opportunity will require supportive policies, streamlined permitting, improved grid connections, and greater regulatory certainty to accelerate deployment across all Member States.
Second edition of the EBA Biogas Manual available for members
EBA has published the second edition of the Biogas Manual, an exclusive members-only guide providing a practical overview of the European legislation and standards governing the biogas and biomethane value chain. Updated to reflect the latest EU policy developments, the Manual covers key topics including energy production, digestate, biogenic CO₂, transport, industry, financing and biomethane certification.
New Report: Research and Innovation Priorities for Europe's Biogas and Biomethane Value Chain 🔬
EBA has published a new report outlining the key research and innovation priorities needed to accelerate the development of Europe’s biogas and biomethane sector.
Developed in collaboration with EBA’s Scientific Advisory Board and leading research institutions across Europe, the report presents a scientific roadmap covering the entire biogas and biomethane value chain. It identifies five interconnected research pillars and highlights cross-cutting priorities, including balanced investment across all technology readiness levels, stronger cross-sector collaboration, improved technology transfer, enhanced measurement infrastructure, and recognition of the sector’s multifunctional role. Together, these recommendations aim to guide future research and innovation efforts while supporting Europe’s competitiveness, decarbonisation, and circular bioeconomy ambitions.
New EBA member-only Analytical Paper: Biomethane in the EU ETS
EBA has published a new members-only analytical paper exploring the role of biomethane within the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS). As biomethane becomes an increasingly important decarbonisation solution for industry, the paper examines the regulatory framework, key implementation challenges, and opportunities to strengthen market confidence. The analysis highlights the importance of robust Proof of Sustainability, harmonised approaches across Member States, and improved recognition of cross-border biomethane and biogenic CO₂ to unlock the full potential of renewable gases within the EU ETS.
EBA has released an updated edition of its member-only Biogases Q&A, a practical reference document designed to support consistent and evidence-based communication on the biogas sector. Covering topics such as emissions, decarbonisation, feedstocks, cost competitiveness, end uses, and more, the Q&A provides clear, factual answers to the questions most frequently raised by media and stakeholders. Developed as a living resource, it helps members communicate confidently and consistently on the role of biogases in Europe's energy transition. Access the Biogases Q&A via EBANET.
