Grid Ready Forum 2026

Key recommendations to speed up biomethane grid injection

video

At the second Grid Ready Forum in Brussels, 60 experts called for urgent action to remove barriers to biomethane injection into Europe’s gas grids. The discussions highlighted that delays in implementing the EU Gas Package risk slowing biogas deployment at a critical moment for Europe’s energy transition. Participants stressed the need for harmonised rules, faster coordination between Member States, and practical tools such as grid “masterplans” to unlock infrastructure capacity.

The Forum concluded with concrete recommendations to accelerate grid access and support biomethane’s role in Europe’s energy security and defossilisation.

Biogases: Europe’s overlooked path to energy independence?

Reassessing sustainable production potential

EP

As Europe accelerates its transition towards a climate-neutral and secure energy system, biogas and biomethane are emerging as strategic yet often overlooked solutions. Based on updated Guidehouse analysis for the European Biogas Association, this report reassesses Europe’s sustainable biogases production potential and explores how biogases could support Europe’s energy independence targets for 2030, 2040 and 2050.

The report was officially unveiled during a launch event at the European Parliament, co-hosted by MEP Annalisa Corrado and MEP Asger Christensen. The event brought together policymakers and stakeholders to discuss the strategic contribution of biogas and biomethane to Europe’s energy security, sustainability and resilience, and the need to accelerate deployment to unlock Europe’s existing potential.

Building the digital infrastructure for Europe’s biomethane market

digital

As Europe’s biomethane market continues to grow and integrate across borders, digital infrastructure is becoming increasingly important to ensure traceability, compliance, and efficient market operations. In this interview, EBA member FuelFWD shares insights on the sector’s evolution and explains how digital tools can support sustainability data management, chain of custody, and audit-ready reporting across the biomethane value chain. The discussion also highlights the role of digitalisation in enabling a more transparent, scalable, and resilient European biomethane market.

Designing a reality-grounded yet ambitious post-2030 energy framework

shutterstock_2465994799 (1)

In its contribution to the public consultation on the post-2030 Energy Framework, EBA calls for a coherent EU energy strategy that strengthens energy security while accelerating defossilisation. The paper highlights the role of biogas and biomethane in supporting hard-to-electrify sectors while leveraging existing gas infrastructure.

Among its key recommendations, EBA advocates for  stronger EU-wide harmonisation, simplified certification systems, and targeted measures to stimulate investment and biomethane demand. The paper also stresses the need to align climate ambition with affordability, resilience, and industrial competitiveness.

Biogases: a tool for a future-proof EU livestock sector

cow

As the EU reflects on the future of livestock farming, biogases can play a key role in supporting a more sustainable, resilient, and circular agricultural model. A new EBA paper highlights how anaerobic digestion helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions from manure management while producing renewable energy and nutrient-rich digestate.

Beyond climate benefits, biogases can strengthen farm competitiveness and energy self-sufficiency, improve nutrient recycling and soil health, and create new economic opportunities in rural areas. The paper also addresses common misconceptions around livestock intensification and outlines policy recommendations to support integrated crop–livestock–biogas systems across Europe.

Digestate in Europe: state of play in 2026

digestates in europe

Published alongside the European Commission’s Fertiliser Action Plan, EBA’s latest report highlights digestate as a key way to strengthen Europe’s fertiliser resilience and reduce dependence on imported and fossil-based fertilisers. The Action Plan aims to scale up fertiliser supply, with a strong focus on bio-based alternatives and reinforcing domestic nutrient production across the EU.

By positioning digestate as a readily available and scalable option, the report supports key priorities of the Action Plan, including nutrient circularity, fertiliser security, and the development of bio-based fertiliser markets in Europe.

EU PROJECTS

Final conferences: TITAN & ēQATOR projects

conference

Two EU-funded Horizon projects, TITAN and ēQATOR, will hold a joint final conference on 22 June 2026 in Brussels.

The event will showcase breakthrough technologies for advanced biogas conversion, including green hydrogen and renewable fuel production pathways such as methanol. Both projects highlight electrified catalytic processes that support more efficient and sustainable biogas valorisation.

The programme will present key results, discuss scale-up opportunities, and explore the role of innovative biogas conversion pathways in Europe’s energy transition.

As the project approaches its final phase, we are currently working on the task “Roadmaps for scale-up, uptake and replication” of TITAN solutions, aimed at supporting the industrial integration and deployment of the project results. Within this task, the consortium is preparing a set of guidelines for project developers, with the objective of identifying key needs, technical challenges, investment considerations and enabling factors related to the scale-up and replication of such technologies in industrial environments. If you are a project developer or investor active in the sector, your perspective is particularly valuable to ensure that the recommendations developed within TITAN are aligned with current industrial realities and market expectations. You can submit your input by 12 June to the following short survey. It should take 5–10 minutes to complete. The guidelines will be published on the TITAN project website in August 2026.

ēQATOR: Advancing new value pathways for biogas

nl

Funded under the Horizon Europe programme, the ēQATOR project is developing an innovative technology that converts biogas directly into syngas through electrically heated catalytic reforming. The resulting syngas can be used to produce renewable methanol and other green chemicals, creating new valorisation pathways for the biogas sector.

The technology offers a promising alternative for small- and medium-sized biogas plants, particularly where grid access is limited. As part of the project, EBA is contributing to a roadmap for the scale-up, market uptake, and replication of the ēQATOR technology across Europe.

To support this work, EBA recently engaged stakeholders through a webinar and questionnaire to assess the technology’s deployment potential and future market opportunities.

BIOMAPE: biomethane market acceleration and uptake in Europe

Picture10

The BIOMAPE project is a new Horizon Europe initiative running until 2028, aimed at accelerating biomethane production, market uptake, and integration across Europe.

The project addresses key barriers such as fragmented policies, market challenges, and public acceptance by supporting policy harmonisation, market development, cross-border trade, and stakeholder engagement.

As part of this work, BIOMAPE has launched its Biomethane Support Policies Dashboard, an online resource designed to make biomethane policy information across Europe more accessible and easier to navigate. The dashboard will continue to be updated throughout the project.
