Welcome to a new edition of the Green Gas Wire, your trusted source for the latest insights, trends, and developments across Europe’s biogas and biomethane value chain. The last quarter of the year comes with important milestones for the EBA. We broke all record with the organisation of the European Biomethane Weeklast October and now we are thrilled to announce the next edition: mark your calendars for 12-16 October 2026!
Another key moment is just around the corner: the launch of the EBA Statistical Report 2025, offering the most up-to-date and comprehensive overview of biogas and biomethane deployment across Europe. This year’s edition will deliver fresh insights and data to guide policy, investment, and strategic growth for the sector. During the EBA Statistical report webinar on 10 December we will dive into the findings together.
Furthermore, it has been recently launched the first EBA report addressing the social license to operate for biogas and biomethane plants. This manual offers practical guidance for both project developers and nearby residents on how to build trust, address concerns and ensure biogas and biomethane plants are well integrated into local communities.
Lastly, yesterday the new Bioeconomy Strategy was launched, and it is much more flexible than the leaked draft. Strict rules on biomass use and discouraging combustion have been removed. “Efficient use of biomass” is now just a guiding principle, and prioritisation considers factors like feedstock type, environmental impact, circularity, and local context, so biogas is unlikely to be affected. Read the full EBA Press Release about it.
Staying ahead of latest trends can feel like a challenge, but don’t worry—we’ve got you covered. In this edition of the Green Gas Wire we’re bringing you top stories, exclusive interviews, groundbreaking research, and everything you need to stay on top of the latest trends. Curious? Keep reading for all the details you won’t want to miss to help you navigate the changing landscape with confidence!

Policy Pulse: Bioeconomy Strategy
Yesterday, the Bioeconomy Strategy was published and it shows a positive shift from the leaked draft. The strategy aims to boost circularity, climate neutrality, and competitiveness across the EU. EBA welcomes the recognition of biogases and their co-products as a core pillar of Europe’s sustainable bioeconomy.

The Biomethaverse project has reached a major milestone: the first liters of biomethane have been produced at ENGIE Lab CRIGEN’s demo plant in France using an electromethanogenesis pilot and injected into ENGIE’s BiOZ unit. After successful commissioning and safety validation in October 2025, both systems are operational with digestate and electrode inoculation underway.
The ēQATOR project held its consortium meeting in Reading, UK hosted by Johnson Matthey Technology. Partners reviewed progress on resistive and microwave heating reactors, sustainability assessments, and exploitation strategies, alongside technical presentations and a lab tour. The meeting set the stage for the final phase, with pilot demonstrations planned for 2026 in Italy and Norway, reinforcing collaboration toward innovative, sustainable reactor technologies.
