Welcome to the new edition of the Green Gas Wire, your go-to source for the latest insights, trends, and updates on the European biogases value chain.
As Europe continues to navigate the path toward a more resilient and sustainable energy future, we highlight the recent important communication of the Commission: REPowerEU Roadmap. This ambitious initiative marks a major step forward in reducing the EU’s dependence on fossil fuels and accelerating the deployment of renewable gases, including biomethane.
The REPowerEU plan not only reinforces the strategic importance of biogas in achieving energy independence but also aligns closely with the EBA’s vision of a circular, climate-neutral economy. This roadmap is a first step to fully empower our sector to scale up production, foster innovation, and contribute meaningfully to Europe’s green transition.
In parallel, EBA has unveiled its Roadmap towards 2040, outlining a bold vision for the future of the biogases value chain. This strategic document calls for a binding EU target for renewable gases, aiming to unlock the full potential of circular and affordable energy for Europe. You can read more about it in the section below.
Further in this edition, you’ll discover the latest updates from our flagship projects, get to know the newly elected EBA Board, and catch up on our most recent activities and highlights across social media. EBA Newsroom
Welcome our new board!
May 6th we celebrated EBA General Assembly in Brussels. EBA members played a central role in shaping the future of our association by electing a new President and Board, who will lead our mission to scale up sustainable biogas and biomethane production across Europe over the next three years.
A warm welcome to our new President Piero Gattoni and Board members: Michael Niederbacher, Annette Kroll, PJ McCarthy, Guillaume Tuffigo, Sandra Esteves, Stefan Dr. Rauh, Coen Meijers and Maria Malmkvist. 🎉
Leading biomethane off-takers have come together in the Biomethane Off-takers Declaration to call for higher support for biomethane production and offtake. Led by the European Biogas Association, this initiative emphasises biomethane’s essential role in achieving Europe’s climate neutrality objectives while ensuring the continent’s global competitiveness. More than 30 companies have already signed the declaration. Join the movement andsign the Declaration today!
As mentioned above, the EBA Roadmap 2040 calls for a binding EU-level target for biomethane production to unlock the full potential of biogases in delivering circular, affordable, and secure energy. It outlines a strategic vision to scale up the entire biogas value chain, supporting climate goals and energy independence. The roadmap also emphasizes the need for long-term policy support, infrastructure development, and innovation to ensure the sector’s growth and resilience.
Copa-Cogeca, CEMA, and EBA urge the EU to approve RENURE as a sustainable fertiliser alternative. We call for fewer restrictions, alignment with scientific guidance, and support for innovation to boost circular farming and reduce reliance on synthetic fertilisers.
Following the discussions from the Grid Ready Forum last April, the EBA and Common Future have released the Grid Injection Report. The reports highlights the urgent need to modernize and harmonize Europe’s gas infrastructure to enable large-scale biomethane integration.
It emphasizes that streamlined grid access and investment in cross-border interconnections are essential to achieving the EU’s renewable energy and climate targets. Read the full publication here!
“The more we are waiting for decarbonisation efforts at the EU level, the more challenging it will become to meet the target.” — Bernard Vanheule, VP EU Public Affairs, Costa Cruisers.
This statement from Costa Cruisers a leading European cruise operator, highlights why initiatives like the Biomethane Offtakers Declaration are so important.
We are delighted to welcome Piero Gattoni as our new EBA President. During our General Assembly this month, we took the chance to discuss with him on his views for the future of the sector. ⬇️
Last month, the ēQATOR project consortium gathered in Brussels for a two-day General Assembly full of collaboration, reflection, and forward planning. The focus of this meeting was strategic: aligning on our shared goals, supporting one another across work packages, and ensuring we stay united and ambitious in our mission. We also took the time to celebrate key milestones already achieved 🎉!
The FER-PLAY project has come to an end after 3 years of research on the potential and the current challenges related to the rollout of circular fertilisers in Europe. This video highlights the project’s findings, challenges, and recommendations to support the transition to fertilisers made from secondary raw materials while shaping a more sustainable, resource-efficient agricultural sector in Europe.
Last month, ALFA consortium partners gathered in Denmark! The purpose of the visit was to explore Danish biogas facilities, exchange knowledge and experiences, and strengthen the network between the European partners and Danish stakeholders within the biogas sector with the common goal to expand biogas production across Europe.
