Welcome to a new edition of the Green Gas Wire, your trusted source for the latest insights, trends, and developments across Europe’s biogas and biomethane value chain.
As Europe enters a new political cycle, the urgency for competitiveness and security has never been clearer. At the same time the climate goals and the green transition remains important. The Biogas sector, as most affordable and scalable renewable gas while providing energy security with the many biogas plants in Europe, answers to all of those needs. At EBA, we continue to play a central role in helping to shape the future , and this autumn marks a particularly exciting moment for our community.
One of the key highlights of the season is the upcoming European Biomethane Week, which will take place in Brussels from 13 to 17 October. This flagship event will bring together policymakers, industry leaders, researchers, and innovators to explore the latest developments in biomethane and renewable gas. The week will begin on Monday with a Masterclass on Certification and Trade, and a welcome cocktail for those arriving for the conference on Monday. Tuesday the annual European Biogas Conference will start which promises two days of insightful discussions, technical sessions, and networking opportunities. A dedicated online webinar in collaboration with UNECE is organised for Thursday with already a broad audience attending. If you haven’t registered yet, we warmly encourage you to secure your spot and be part of the conversation that is shaping Europe’s energy future.
In the lead-up to this major event, this week featured two standout moments that reflect the growing momentum around renewable gases. On Tuesday morning, biomethane took centre stage at the European Parliament during the event “Biomethane's Role in Europe's Industrial Future”, hosted by MEP Andrea Wechsler. The discussion underscored biomethane’s strategic value as a cost-competitive, homegrown, and dispatchable energy source capable of replacing fossil gas, decarbonising industry and transport, and enhancing Europe’s energy security. As national plans to phase out Russian gas take shape, the call for ambitious targets and investment in biomethane is louder than ever. The event featured contributions from the European Commission, SEA-LNG, and TATA Steel, highlighting the sector’s readiness to lead Europe’s clean industrial transition.
Meanwhile, EBA continues to shed light also on the benefits that the industry can bring beyond the production of renewable energy. Momentum around the valorisation of biogenic CO₂ is growing rapidly. Our recent webinar on the EBA white paper drew over participants - a clear sign of the urgency and relevance of this topic. The discussion highlighted the sector’s readiness to scale up carbon capture and utilisation, and the need for supportive policy and infrastructure to unlock its full potential. Finally, we cannot overlook the broader political context. In her recent State of the Union address, President Ursula von der Leyen called for a “New Europe” - one that is more independent, resilient, and climate-conscious. Her speech reaffirmed the importance of affordable renewable energy in securing Europe’s future. It underscores the role of our sector in achieving these goals. As we move forward, EBA remains committed to supporting this vision and driving meaningful change.

The new Industry Vision for Biogases Tripartite Agreements, jointly prepared by EBA and the BIP Support Group, sets out a strategic roadmap for scaling up biogases across Europe. This paper outlines how coordinated agreements between the European Commission, Member States, and industry can unlock the sector’s full potential: boosting renewable gas production, supporting energy security, and delivering climate and economic benefits. The document highlights core objectives, key intervention areas, and the need for robust governance to ensure biogases play a central role in Europe’s clean energy transition.

Watersmart Solutions with Commissioner Jørgensen
EBA recently met with Dan Jørgensen, European Commissioner for Energy and Housing, to discuss the vital link between water and energy in the context of Europe’s Water Resilience Strategy. With many net-zero technologies placing pressure on water resources, the biogas sector is stepping up with water-smart solutions, from closed-loop systems and rainwater harvesting to advanced purification technologies already in use in Flanders and the Netherlands. EBA stands ready to collaborate with the Commission to ensure that energy and water strategies go hand in hand for a truly sustainable future.
The Let Green Gas Count coalition has released high-level recommendations to improve how renewable and low-carbon gases like biomethane are recognised in corporate greenhouse gas reporting. The guidance calls for transparent, market-based accounting using certified instruments, and outlines six quality criteria for certificates and claims. These measures aim to support credible disclosures, harmonise reporting practices, and unlock stronger investment signals for renewable gas deployment across Europe.
EBA has issued a formal call urging the European Commission to include biogas and biomethane in the design of the upcoming Innovation Fund (IF) auction. The sector offers scalable, cost-effective solutions for decarbonisation, and its exclusion would risk missing key opportunities for climate progress. EBA advocates for a fair and inclusive framework that recognises the full potential of renewable gases in Europe’s energy transition.
Deep dive into industry trends: latest EBA publications
EBA’s latest white paper highlights the untapped potential of biogenic CO₂ from biogases as a scalable, cost-effective solution for Europe’s carbon neutrality goals. With over 125 biomethane plants already capturing 1.16 Mt of CO₂ - set to double by 2027 - the sector is leading the way in carbon capture, utilisation, and storage. By 2040, biogenic CO₂ could supply over 25% of the EU’s carbon capture needs, making it a vital resource for climate, circularity, and competitiveness. Under the EU Fertilising Products Regulation, digestate can be certified and traded across Europe as a fertiliser.
In this interview, SUEZ shares insights into the certification process, key challenges, and its relevance for sustainable waste management and agriculture.
The EQATOR project has released its first peer-reviewed scientific report, now available on ScienceDirect. The study explores innovative pathways for nutrient recovery from biogas digestate, with a focus on sustainable fertiliser production. This marks a key milestone in advancing circular bioeconomy solutions and highlights the potential of biogas systems to contribute not only to energy but also to agriculture and resource efficiency.
Yesterday’s ALFA final event in Brussels brought together researchers, stakeholders, and policymakers to explore the outcomes of three years of collaboration within the ALFA project. The EBA team was proud to be part of the speaker line up: George Osei Owusu, from our technical team, presented the current state of biogas in the EU, highlighting its evolution, opportunities, and challenges. Meanwhile, Anna Onida, from our policy team, joined a panel discussion, addressing key questions from the field. The event was a valuable opportunity to learn, connect, and exchange ideas. EBA is proud to have contributed to the project, and deeply appreciate the commitment and collaboration of all partners. The final event was a fitting celebration of our shared achievements.
