January 2026

Welcome to a new edition of the Green Gas Wire, your trusted source for the latest insights, trends, and developments across Europe’s biogas and biomethane value chain.

As we begin a new year, the entire EBA team would like to wish you a very happy start to 2026 and all the best for what promises to be an exciting and pivotal year for biogases. EBA leaves behind an intense 2025 showcased in the highlights of the  EBA Activity Report launched some weeks ago.

EBA closed 2025 with the publication of the 15th edition of EBA’s Statistical Report, offering the most comprehensive overview of the current status and future potential of Europe’s biogas and biomethane sectors. “Biogases have already proven themselves as essential components of the EU path to 2030 and 2040 climate and energy target and essential to achieve climate neutrality by 2025. They strengthen our competitiveness, enhance our energy security and accelerate our climate transition. The sector is willing and ready to deliver, and as we look across Europe we have every reason to be optimistic. The progress in a number of member states  such as, Italy, Denmark, France or the Netherlands, shows that it is possible when clear policies are met with strong ambitions.” explained Anna Venturini, Policy Director at EBA, during the Statistical report webinar.

EBA entered 2026 with renewed momentum, reaffirming its determination to drive the scale-up of the biogas sector during a meeting with Commissioner for Energy, Dan Jørgensen. To unlock the full potential of biogases, we must act together. REPowerEU laid the political foundations for this work. The Biogas Tripartite Agreement now represents a pivotal opportunity to strengthen joint efforts to scale up biogases across Member States, crucial for both the energy transition and Europe’s energy security.

EBA voices sector needs in meeting with Commissioner for Energy, Dan Jørgensen

    Group picture

EBA recently held a valuable exchange with European Commissioner for Energy, Dan Jørgensen. The discussion highlighted biomethane as a key contributor to EU competitiveness, energy security and new revenue streams for farmers. During the meeting, EBA symbolically handed over the key of the #UnlockBiogases campaign, underlining the vast untapped potential of a sector already delivering 19 bcm of biogases in the European Union. To scale up biogases, Europe needs strong political commitment and market uptake. Continued dialogue and collaboration will be essential for biogases to fully deliver their climate, economic and energy‑security benefits.

Policy Pulse: EBA’s key recommendations on ANNEX VI

The EBA’s position paper on the revision of RED Annex VI outlines the sector’s key recommendations to improve the EU’s greenhouse‑gas calculation rules for biogas and biomethane. As the updated Annex VI will directly influence sustainability recognition and market access, EBA calls for clearer default values, more accurate methane‑emissions accounting, and practical methodologies that reflect real production conditions. The paper highlights the importance of a robust and workable framework to fully capture the climate benefits of biogases and support their scale‑up across Europe. Read the full position paper here!

15th EBA Statistical Report unveiled: biogases strategic pillar for energy security, competitiveness and sustainability

Biogases are gaining strategic importance for Europe’s security of supply and flexibility,

as highlighted in the EBA Statistical Report 2025. With EU‑27 gas demand at 332 bcm and 273 bcm still imported, and dispatchable power capacity falling from 424 GW in 2012 to about 380 GW in 2023, scaling domestic, clean and dispatchable biogases are essential to reduce dependence and support the grid during low solar and wind periods.

In 2024, biogases output reached 22 bcm, including 5.2 bcm biomethane from 1,620 plants in 25 countries. Europe also generated 25 Mt (DM) of digestate, capable of replacing 17% of nitrogen fertilisers and gaining new valorisation uses. Despite growing investment and more sustainable feedstocks, regulatory uncertainty continues to slow renewable gas deployment at a crucial time. Get the full report here!
